This program will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Course content includes pharmacy terminology, pharmacy calculations, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining generic & brand names drugs. Additionally, this program includes a Medical Administration course covering key topics such as medical ethics and law, basics of insurance billing and coding, telephone techniques, scheduling appointments, and medical records management.

This comprehensive course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Course content includes pharmacy medical terminology, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining generic and brand names drugs and much, much more. This program also prepares learners to function effectively in many of the administrative and clerical positions in the healthcare industry. The content offers learners a well-rounded introduction to medical administration that delivers the skills students require to obtain an administrative medical assistant position or advance within their current healthcare career.

 

Program Objectives

After completing this program, learners will be able to:

  • Define the difference between retail and hospital pharmacy settings
  • Demonstrate ethical conduct in all duties performed
  • Explain the laws that govern pharmacy, whether federal or state mandated
  • Interpret physician orders and prescriptions
  • Prepare and explain the administration of medications
  • Define medical and pharmaceutical terms and common abbreviations
  • Explain the pharmacology of medications in relation to the anatomy affected
  • Perform pharmaceutical calculations
  • Communicate effectively with patients and medical professionals
  • Recognize the importance of confidentiality of all patient information
  • Process insurance billing and/or collect payments
  • Control inventory
  • Discuss important milestones and leaders in the history of pharmacy practice
  • Identify the requirements, behaviors, characteristics, and career options for the pharmacy technician
  • Describe how advances in technology and research impacts pharmacy practice
  • Describe the commonly used drug reference resources including the major reason for use and the organization
  • Describe the drugs in the current Top 200 Drug List including brand and generic name, drug classification, and uses
  • Function effectively in administrative and clerical positions in the medical office
  • Describe the roles of a professional medical administrative assistant
  • Manage health information and records according to privacy policies
  • Complete basic billing and coding to process insurance forms
  • Manage practice finances
  • Assist in handling medical emergencies
  • Describe techniques for academic and career development
  • Describe the healthcare environment

 

Certifications

Students who complete this course are prepared for national certification:

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) national technician certification exam
  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam.

 

Externship

Although not a requirement, once students complete the program, they have the ability to participate in an externship and/or hands on practicum so as to practice the skills necessary to perform the job requirements of a professional in this field. Students will be assisted with completing a resume and/or other requirements necessary to work in this field. All students who complete this program are eligible to participate in an externship and will be placed with a participating organization near their location.

NOTE: In order to take an externship, one must successfully complete and pass the national certification exam.
